Twin Minimum Installation Platforms

The Project

Proeon Systems were asked to develop an integrated and complete package of control and communications systems for three separate assets; two nearly identical minimum installation platforms and an FPSO, for twin conductor platforms located in Nigeria, West Africa.

The brief was to develop the Process Control Systems (PCS), safety Instruments Systems (SIS) and the Low Voltage Motor Control Systems (MCC) including software and associated SCADA.

The Challenge

To develop a fully integrated MCC, DCS & Telecoms package including Low voltage electrical switchboard, Motor Control Centre and essential / non-essential distribution boards package for conductor supported platforms; located in Nigeria, West Coast of Africa.

Within this, 2 off complete platform control systems including process control and integrated safety and fire and gas system were required alongside the design and supply of a new PAGA and VOIP system.

The system had to be robust, simple and have low intervention and running costs as its geographic location could prevent rapid change out of hardware components and their availability.

Each minimum installation asset has limited space on board so consideration to the selection of equipment and its layout is important when looking at safety, access, operation, heat build-up, and protection.

Each asset had to have multi-bay control panels constructed with up to 9 interconnected bays on the fixed assets and the inclusion of further accessory cabinets for Servers and operations on the FPSO.

Asset one and two were nearly identical with minor changes locally and each was developed with the following equipment:

  • 1x LV MCC

  • Essential and Non-essential distribution boards

  • 1x PCS / termination panel

  • 1x SIS / termination panel

  • 1x Telecoms panel

  • PCS and SIS software

Asset three the FPSO contained:

  • 1x PCS / termination panel

  • 1x SIS / termination panel

  • 1x Telecoms panel

  • 1x shutdown support panel

  • 1x Server cabinet (populated with SCADA server, OPC UA and associated switches)

  • 1x EWS workstation

  • 2x OWS workstations

  • 1x Printer

  • 2x engineering laptops

  • PCS and SIS software

  • SCADA software and screen development

  • SCADA redundant server configuration (historian, domain control, storage etc)

The PCS and SIS systems for the two assets and the FPSO are fully configured as a single integrated solution providing complete communications across all three installations utilising a dual redundant configuration over Profinet and Profibus for optimum availability.

The SCADA software was specifically developed to communicate to the PCS and SIS nodes and provides a common operator interface for the FPSO.

Screens and Displays were common to all assets sharing those features and layouts on both the local asset HMI’s and the FPSO’s based control suit. Data provided within the SCADA system included alarms, events and historian.

The software has been designed to be expandable to support additional client’s platforms and future expansion.

The development of these systems also included:

  •  MCC & DCS for both Platforms

  • Platform 1 -  PA/GA equipment

  • Platform 2 -  PA/GA equipment

  • FPSO PA/GA equipment

  • Platform 1 - VOIP phone equipment

  • Platform 2 -  VOIP phone equipment

  • FPSO VOIP phone equipment

  • Configuration of the PA/GA and phone systems

  • Design Engineering and Design documentation

  • FAT & SAT of above systems

  • Installation & Commissioning

In Conclusion

The solution was provided utilising the Siemens platform of equipment which is the currently most accessible hardware in the region and client approved.  Proeon are also a Siemens Solution Partner providing leading technical expertise to projects like these.

The large scale of this project fitted well within the capabilities of Proeon’s multi-disciplined approach to solution development; Design, Develop, Manufacture, Test, and Deliver.

The delivery of this project was managed from our comprehensive facilities in Norwich, UK and once shipped to Nigeria we delivered the installation and commissioning with the client at the fabrication yard utilising our in-country collaboration team, Supanova Energy.

With projects this complex we plan and work closely with our installation team members, and in this instance, we flew key in country Engineer’s to the UK to familiarise themselves with the equipment and procedures prior to shipment. The team in Nigeria was over seen and supported by UK based Engineering utilising IT technology and direct comms. Delivering within the exacting parameters of our client.

Proeon’s broad Engineering disciplines span all aspects of a complex project like this; from the regular MCC panels through control room SCADA software and safety systems all the way through to Telecommunications systems we can deliver a comprehensive solution to your needs.

The project was completed by Proeon for the client on time and within budget for all systems designed and installed.
